Stinging Insect Nests

Because bees and stinging insects are found almost everywhere, seeing one or two does not mean you have a nest nearby. In some cases, you may see an actual nest. To determine what kind of stinging insect you’re dealing with, look at the nest:

Beehives

Bees make their hives from a wax they produce. You’ll often find these in cracks and enclosed spaces, such as trees, chimneys, and under roofs and likely notice hundreds of bees crawling around the entrance.

Wasp Nests

Made of materials like leaves, twigs, and mud, wasp nests have a grey appearance. They hang in trees or under the eaves of your roof. Paper wasps build small nests out of fibers, while hornets and similar wasps make large nests out of wood pulp.

Yellow Jacket Nests

Yellow jackets are a type of wasp but with a very unique nesting structure. Although they also make their nests out of saliva and wood pulp, unlike other wasps and bees, yellow jackets prefer to nest underground. When they’re above ground, they may build very unique structures attached to siding or underneath lawn furniture. They do not typically build hanging nests the way that other wasps do.

Types and Risks of Stinging Insects

  • Common Types of Stinging Insects
Bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets are the most common stinging insects that cause problems in residential and commercial settings. Each of these insects has distinct characteristics and behaviors, making it essential to identify them correctly for effective removal.
  • Stinging Insect Health Concerns
Stings from these insects can cause pain, swelling, and allergic reactions. In some cases, individuals may experience severe reactions such as anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
  • Where Stinging Insects Build Nests
Stinging insects often build their nests in hidden or hard-to-reach places such as attics, wall voids, trees, eaves, and underground. Nests can grow rapidly, increasing the number of insects and the risk they pose to people and pets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let us answer all your ant removal questions.

How Much Does Removal of Bees or Wasps Cost?

The cost will depend on a few factors – what the stinging pest is, where the nest is located, and what needs to be done to remove them. When you call us, we’ll discuss your situation and needs to provide you with a specific quote.

Can I Handle a Nest of Bees or Wasps on My Own?

You should not. When provoked, bees and wasps will sting. Trying to remove them without the proper protective equipment and techniques can be dangerous and you run the risk of not fully removing the nest. Removal of stinging pests should be handled only by a trained professional.

Should I Remove a Bees Nest if It’s Not Near a Building or People?

No. Bees are helpful pollinators to have for your garden and they do not sting unless their hive is in danger. As long as the nest is away from high traffic areas, including areas children or pets walk through, and there is no concern about bee sting allergies, there is no harm in leaving it. Nests attached to man-made structures should be removed to avoid property damage. We would ultimately work with you to decide if a hive on the property posed a danger.

Is It Illegal to Remove Honeybees?

Because of the benefit honeybees have on the environment it is not recommended to remove honey bees that do not pose a danger to humans or pets. A hive in your home or business or near an area that sees high traffic is considered a pest, and can be removed by a professional pest control company.

What If I Have A Bee/Wasp Emergency?

Stinging insects on your property can pose an immediate danger. If this is the case, we provide 24 hour emergency services to handle problems fast and keep your family safe. Even for less urgent nests, we offer same day and next day appointments.
