What Are Bed Bugs and How Did I Get Them?

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that grow up to 5mm in length. While they do not fly, they are adept at hitching rides on clothing, furniture, boxes, and linens, often traveling with people. Locations with high visitor turnover, such as hotels and apartments, are particularly at risk for bed bug infestations.

Identifying Bed Bug Infestations

Bed bugs prefer to hide in places where they can remain undisturbed. Common hiding spots include mattresses, box springs, headboards, and upholstered furniture. They can also be found in closets, behind baseboards, and in other small, concealed areas. Female bed bugs can lay up to five eggs per day, often in cracks and crevices, leading to rapid population growth.

Impact of Bed Bug Bites

Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and other mammals, including household pets. While they do not transmit diseases, their bites can cause itching, rashes, and allergic reactions in some individuals. Unlike mosquitoes, bed bugs bite multiple times, resulting in numerous itchy welts.

Challenges of Living with Bed Bugs

The persistent itching from bed bug bites can make living with these pests extremely uncomfortable. Additionally, the mere presence of bed bugs can disrupt sleep and cause significant anxiety. Therefore, prompt and thorough bed bug removal is essential when an infestation is detected.

Bed bugs prefer to bite at night, and they prefer to live near their hosts. It’s why they are so common around beds. But if they travel to a place where there are no beds, bed bugs can still start an infestation and will simply find somewhere else to hide. Bed bugs have been found in couches, walls – even laptops and filing cabinets. They will also try to feed during the day if they get hungry enough.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs Permanently

Getting rid of bed bugs permanently takes patience, thorough inspections, and often multiple treatments. Working with an experienced Pest Control Company that specializes in Bed Bug Treatments and incorporates the principles of IPM, or Integrated Pest Management, you can permanently get rid of your bed bug infestation.

The IPM Institute of North America defines Integrated Pest Management as, “a sustainable, science-based, decision-making process that combines biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools to identify, manage and reduce risk from pests and pest management tools and strategies in a way that minimizes overall economic, health and environmental risks.”

A quality pest control company implements IPM practices into their bed bug procedures to ensure you get rid of bed bugs safely and permanently.

An IPM approach to bed bugs means low-risk pesticides will and should be used but in minimized amounts. IPM bed bug procedures recognize the value of vacuuming, steam, heat treatments, Cryonite or freeze treatments, trapping, and monitoring to permanently get rid of bed bugs.

Another foundation of effective IPM is communication with your PMP and customer education. Bed bug IPM relies on the homeowner to be vigilant in checking bed bug traps and communicating their findings to their Pest Management Professional.

In turn, the PMP will ask questions and investigate how the infestation may have been introduced into your home. In determining the source of your bed bug infestation you can make adjustments to your routine and avoid a future bed bug infestation.

Successful bed bug IPM requires a relationship with excellent communication between PMP and the homeowner; that is why your choice of pest control company is very important. Using these principles, you can get rid of bed bugs permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let us answer all your ant removal questions.

How Can You Tell if You Have Bed Bugs in Your Mattress?

Bedbugs, bed bug eggs, and bed bug fecal stains are the sure signs of bed bugs on your bed. Bed bugs are up to 3/8” long and straw-colored to a dark mahogany brown color. They are fast-moving and love to hide in folds and seams. Eggs are 0.1” long and whitish in color. Eggs look similar to lice knits but will be attached to surfaces such as the bed. Eggs are the hardest to find so focus on looking for adults or fecal stains.

Bed bug feces is almost pure blood so their fecal staining looks like bloodstains. Small blackish spots will buildup where they congregate or feed. Sometimes these spots look like mold spots. Dampen a white cloth with hot water and rub these areas and if the spots are bed bug fecal spots the cloth will turn red from the dissolved blood.

Can I Get Rid of Bed Bugs on My Own?

Some people will try vacuuming, washing sheets, and over-the-counter sprays to get rid of bed bugs, but these are ineffective. Bed bugs hide in hard to reach areas that can be missed or misunderstood by even the most thorough cleaning, and many infestations are resistant to store bought pesticides. Even if you remove some bed bugs, anything less than a complete elimination means the infestation will return.

How Much Does It Cost to Remove Bed Bugs?

The rates for bed bug control depend on a few factors – the property type, the size of the infestation, and the type of treatment needed. Each job can have a different rate so it is best to call us to receive a personalized quote. Our agents are available to take your call 24 hours a day.

Is Bed Bug Control Safe to Use in My Home?

Yes. Heat treatments and cryonite treatments are chemical free, relying on temperature to eliminate bed bugs instead. They are harmless for you, your pets, and your home. Modern pesticides are also completely safe to use around people and animals given a couple hours of drying time. Every treatment we use will be safe for you and your family.

If I Have Other Pests Besides Bed Bugs, Can You Help?

Yes. We are a full service pest control company, so bed bugs are only one of the many pests we can handle. We offer one time extermination and ongoing pest control for every common pest as well as wildlife.

Can Bed Bugs Spread?

Yes. If you see one bed bug there is a high probability that there are more, many more…During the first and second month of a bed bug infestation, they tend to spread slowly.

By the third month, the infestation can explode! It is at this time that some of the adult bed bugs will crawl to other rooms within the infected area.

Within 6 months of bringing a pregnant female bed bug into your home, there can be over  10,000 adults, over 100,000 baby bed bugs (nymphs) and more than 55,000 eggs just waiting to hatch and spread!

Even if they don’t find food in the new area, they can still live for a whole year without eating. In the meantime they can be busy  reproducing and infesting new areas.

This is one of the primary reasons why we recommend getting professional help with your bed bug problem as soon as possible.

Can Bed Bugs Make You Sick?

Bed bugs do carry diseases and are parasites that bite and suck human blood. There is a possibility that you can  get sick from a bed bug. Children are susceptible to blood loss danger from bed bugs more than adults, especially if already anemic.

Thankfully, no proven cases of a transferable communicable disease have been found due to bed bugs. While similar to mosquitos due to the fact that they consume human blood, their limited travel distances makes it harder for them to come in contact with an infected human and then transfer that disease to someone else.
