Where do Mosquitoes Come From & Where Do they Live?

Find Out Where These Blood Sucking Pests Hide One Your Property

Mosquitoes need standing water to begin their life cycle and hatch. They spend the first 10 days of their life in standing water. After they are born the females live the longest for about 50 days. The males only live for 10 days, dying shortly after mating.

During the day some mosquitoes (Aedes species)  stay out of the hot sun by resting in bushes, weeds, and other dark areas around your home or commercial property. At dusk other mosquitoes (like the Culex species) come out to feast on warm blooded animals, which includes us!

Only female mosquitoes bite. They bite because they require the protein in their blood in order to make their eggs. They’re not really “Feeding” on humans, so much as they’re processing proteins from blood. They otherwise feed on nectar from plants, which is why they like the bushes and vegetation around your home so much.

Treating Mosquitos Yourself with Deet, Permethrin, and other Insecticides Only Works Temporarily

Professional mosquito treatments are necessary to effectively eradicate the larger mosquito populations we face in the hot Southeast portion of the United States.

Are Mosquito Bites Dangerous? Could a Mosquito Bite Kill Me?

All mosquitoes carry the risk of disease. Although only a very small fraction of mosquitoes are likely to be carriers of any illness that will affect humans, the diseases they do carry can be extremely dangerous. They include:

  • Zika Virus
  • West Nile Virus
  • Dengue Fever
  • Malaria
  • Encephalitis, and More

Some of these diseases are fatal, and others can be harmful to young children and the elderly. Mosquitoes are known for their itchy bites, but it is the risk of disease that makes mosquito control in so important, and why we are so often called to residential properties.

Do scented plants, oils, and bug zappers kill mosquitoes?

DIY products are not capable of controlling mosquitoes effectively in the Atlanta area. Over the counter sprays tend to be inefficient, quickly wash away, and unable to control mosquitoes for longer. They would also require perfection, as any spots you miss can quickly be taken over by mosquitoes.

Scented plants are also not very effective. Nor are additives that go into water, because although they can kill mosquito eggs temporarily, they also attract them to your home and rarely last for long. DIY mosquito control is rarely able to control an infestation, and when it does, it lasts for less time than most professional mosquito exterminator productself.

Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, not light the way that other bugs are. In fact, bug zappers almost exclusively kill insects that are good for the environment, and leave ones like mosquitoes unharmed. Mosquito inserts are similarly ineffective, and like some other DIY treatment methods, they may attract more mosquitoes to your property.

When does Mosquito Season Begin and end?

Our mosquito season begins in March or April and ends September or October.

A good rule of thumb is that mosquitoes are active outside when humans are most active outside.

The temperature needs to be 50 degrees Fahrenheit before mosquitoes breed, grow, and become a nuisance.

As it gets colder some mosquito species die in the winter. Hibernating mosquitoes find shelter in various warm places and wait until it gets warmer to come out the following season.

What do mosquito bites look like?

Mosquito bites are the itchy bumps that appear after mosquitoes use their mouth to puncture your skin and feed on your blood.  Occasionally a mosquito bite causes a large area of swelling, soreness and redness.

Mosquito bites have these characteristics:

  • A puffy, white and reddish bump that appears a few minutes after the bite
  • A hard, itchy, reddish-brown bump, or multiple bumps, appearing a day or so after the bite or bites
  • Small blisters instead of hard bumps
I wake up with a lot of bites. How do I know if these are mosquitoes?

If you’re waking up with a lot of bumps and bites, the problem may be something else, like bed bugs. Mosquitoes tend to only bite once, after which they take what they need and lay their eggs.

We can help you determine if there are other biting pests on your property. Keep in mind that you may not notice mosquito bites right away, so a more detailed inspection is needed to determine what pest may be affecting you.

Can Mosquitoes Harm My Pets?

Yes, mosquitos post a real threat to your cats or dogs. A simple bite can transmit disease and especially in an older pet or one with a weakened immune system, a bite can even be fatal.

Thankfully, dogs and cats have thick fur and this often protects them from some bites.

The best way to determine if your pet has been bitten by a mosquito is to check them regular for swollen or red bumps. If they spend time outdoors this is even more important.

The best prevention for mosquito bites is to prevent them from being on your property in the first place.

Do you need access to the inside of my property to treat for mosquitoes?

Mosquito control takes place almost entirely outdoors, although there are solutions should you find mosquitoes frequently coming into your property. The most effective treatment is a type of organic pesticide. When specifically targeted to the right areas, the insecticide eliminates all mosquitoes currently on the property and leaves behind a thin residue that mosquitoes tend to avoid.

There are other treatments we can use as well, including helping clear up areas that may lead to mosquitoes, examining the property to see if why mosquitoes are entering (and seal up anything that requires help), and more. Our mosquito control services will help reduce mosquito populations and make sure they are unable to come back easily.

What Types of Property Do You Offer Mosquito Control Services For?

Here at Nextgen Pest Solutions, we work with all different types of customers to provide comprehensive mosquito removal and support. We offer:

  • Residential Mosquito Services – Most of our mosquito requests come from homeowners hoping to keep their family safe throughout the warm months. Our team is extremely detailed, capable of finding all potential mosquito resting spots and making sure that these pests are kept away.

  • Commercial Mosquito Control Services – When commercial properties struggle with mosquitoes, it is not just a safety issue. It also affects customer satisfaction and retention. For businesses that have mosquito problems, Nextgen Pest Solutions is here to help.
How Are Mosquitos Getting On My Property?

Mosquitoes, unlike many other types of pests, are not that skilled sneaking through small cracks. If they’re able to enter your property, it usually means there is a large opening available, either from a window/door left open, from holes in mesh windows, and through other large openings.

Sealing these openings is important for preventing mosquitoes, but it is still important to make sure that you keep your doors and windows closed even after a mosquito treatment.

Is Mosquito Control Included in Your Regular Pest Control Service?

Mosquito control is a supplementary service that can be requested to be added to your regular pest control services. Mosquito extermination also needs to be completed monthly, so if you are on a quarterly service contract you may want to consider switching to a monthly service for better results.

How Safe Are the Treatments That You Use?

Many of the solutions that we use for mosquito extermination are either made professionally from plants, or based on plants. They are considered to be completely safe to humans. We do always recommend those that are extremely sensitive or immunocompromised to allow the solutions to settle before touching or spending time in areas recently sprayed for mosquitoes, but there is no reason to believe that these treatments will harm humans or pets.
