Mite calls often begin as a mystery. When a customer calls complaining of mysterious bug bites and skin irritations, there are a myriad of reasons they could be experiencing these symptoms. It could be an allergic reaction to a new laundry soap, or it could be bed bugs. At Nextgen Pest Solutions, our technicians are expertly trained to inspect your home and surroundings, and accurately identify the source of your irritation.
Often when dealing with mites, it becomes necessary to partner with experts in other fields. Mites are arachnids, like spiders and ticks, but their behaviors vary depending upon the species. Some mites are parasitic like ticks, while other soil mite species are considered beneficial as they help to break down organic matter. Mites are diverse in their behaviors and the manner in which they make pests of themselves.
In fact, many mite infestations do not require the services of a pest control company; a prescription from your doctor will do the trick. Often the trained and experienced eye of your Pest Management Professional spearheads the investigation and helps to identify the mite in question.
At Nextgen Pest Solutions, we aim to serve our community. If your mite situation will not benefit from a pest control treatment, we simply provide information to prevent mites and other insects and point you in the right direction. However, there are many instances where pest control treatments can alleviate a mite problem.
There are nearly 50,000 species of named mites on Earth. Of these species, some mites are parasitic and require either birds or rats/rodents as hosts. Bird mites and rodent mites live on and in the nests of these animals and require their blood to reproduce. Bird and rat mites become a pest control problem in situations where birds or rodents have recently been removed from a home.
When a bird or rat family seeks shelter in your attic, ultimately, they must be evicted. However, they potentially leave behind nesting material filled with desperate and hungry bird or rodent mites. When their primary host is no longer present, these mites may wander into your living space and attempt to survive on human blood. People experiencing these vexing symptoms are often deeply troubled and suspect other insects like bed bugs or fleas.
Bird mites and rodent mites can not reproduce on human blood. Therefore, if the primary host is indeed evicted, the bird and rodent mites will die off on their own. However, we can speed up this extinction with a pest control treatment. By treating the resting places of the birds and the rats, many of the mites will be eliminated.
If you recently had a bird or rodent infestation, and are now experiencing unexplained bites, consider the bird or rodent mites as the culprit.
Sometimes mites in the yard come into conflict with humans. Whether the conflict is biting or skin irritation, occasionally invading our homes, or damaging our plants and gardens, our pest control treatments can knock mites back to non-pest status.
Clover mites are most often found in well fertilized lawns and can accumulate in large numbers. They are not dangerous in that they do not bite or pass disease to humans. However, they are small in size, but large in numbers. Clover mites are generally active in fall and spring, and after a heavy rain, excessive temperatures, or a change in season, they may slip indoors by the hundreds or even thousands. Be careful not to crush clover mites indoors as they will leave a brownish-red stain on your curtains or carpeting.
In areas where clover mites are a regular and severe problem, preventative treatments can be applied. By treating the shrubs, grass, and foliage where clover mites live and reproduce, you can reduce the damage from clover mites to your lawn and shrubs, and also prevent them from getting indoors.
At Nextgen Pest Solutions, we always strive to implement Integrative Pest Management (IPM) solutions. Once indoors, we recommend vacuuming the clover mites to remove them without crushing them. In addition, inspect and repair the gaps, cracks, and crevices through which the clover mites entered your home.
Chiggers are nearly an accepted fact of living in the south. Chiggers are most commonly encountered when we walk through their natural environment such as tall grasses, weedy areas, or briar patches. Commonly known as red bugs, chiggers get under our skin and cause intense itchiness and redness. They can remain attached to animals for an extended period of time, but usually fall off of humans quickly after a shower.
Chiggers are not usually a suburban neighborhood issue, but if conditions are right, they can reproduce and become a nuisance. Often, by keeping your yard trimmed and in good repair, you can avoid most chigger confrontations. However, sometimes pest control treatments are necessary to reduce chiggers in a certain oak tree or area of the yard.
Spider mites are considered a garden or a landscape pest rather than a general household pest. Spider mites can devastate certain crops and both hobby and commercial farmers must always be on the lookout for spider mites. Spider mites are best treated with professional miticides designed specifically for them. In trying to save your plants be sure to read and follow the label directions. Many spider mite infestations require multiple treatments as the insecticides do not kill the spider mite egg.
Pest Management Professionals certainly have their place in the battle against some species of mites, but admittedly, we are not the best solution for others. To remedy many types of mites a trip to the doctor or veterinarian is needed. As stated above, mites make pests of themselves in a variety of ways, therefore the best solutions vary as well.
As stated above, pest control treatments are not the only solution for mites. At Nextgen Pest Solutions we will gladly share our knowledge and experience with you to help you solve your problem.
