How Are Squirrels Dangerous?
Squirrels are often harmless away from a property, but inside of the property they can cause a lot of trouble. Squirrels can carry some diseases and parasites that are transmittable to humans, such as ringworm and fleas. However, they do the most damage to the building they’re inhabiting, chewing on wiring, urinating on and ripping up insulation for nests, and tearing holes in siding and roofs.
It’s also not uncommon for juveniles or adults who have just gotten lost or stuck somewhere in the walls to die inside the building, creating a horrible smell that’s difficult to eliminate. But the property damage isn’t just annoying, it can be dangerous. For example, the frayed wiring they’ve chewed the insulation could potentially start a fire. This is why rapid squirrel control is so important.
Are There Signs of Squirrels In Your House?
Squirrels themselves tend to be less visible than other pest species since they like to live in areas out of sight of people. But there are number of signs to watch for. These include:
- Scratching or rustling sounds in the walls or attic – Squirrels typically nest in these areas and are most active in the mornings and evenings.
- Lots of squirrels around outside – These animals are abundant in most places, but if they’re nesting in your building you’ll see even more of them than usual.
- Chewing damage – Squirrels chew siding, vents, insulation, wires, and more. You may find this damage both inside and outside of a property.
- Squirrel droppings – Squirrel feces can look very similar to other animals, like mice and rats. But if you find any of these kind of droppings, pest control is probably needed.
In general, squirrels tend to prefer higher-up areas in buildings, like attics, where they can easily access nearby trees. If you suspect squirrels are in your building, checking up there is a good idea, as is checking your HVAC and any water pipes that may be up there for evidence of chewing.
How Do You Address Squirrel Problems?
